Halloween Mahjong: how to play
Halloween Mahjong is a free Halloween mahjong game online, hosted by Midnight, a sleek black cat with lantern-yellow eyes. It is mahjong solitaire with 32 Halloween tiles: pumpkins, waving bats, sleepy moons, owls, cauldrons, candy corn, toadstools and more. Match free pairs to clear five night tables, from the Pumpkin Patch to the Star Castle.
How to play
- To play this Halloween mahjong game online, tap two tiles with the same picture that are both free to take them away. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open. Blocked tiles look darker.
- Keyboard: the arrow keys step through the free tiles, Enter or Space picks one, H shows a hint and S shuffles.
- There are 32 Halloween pictures, each a different shape in its own colour, so even the biggest table shows every picture at most four times.
- HINT shows a pair you can take (costs 50 points). If no moves are left, or you tap SHUFFLE twice, you lose a heart and the tiles left are shared out again so they can still be cleared.
- Take pairs within 4 seconds of each other for a combo, up to ×10: each pair scores 10 × the combo. A cleared table adds 100 × the level number plus a speed bonus.
- Each table has a generous clock; running out costs a heart and refills it. Three stars per level: clear it, clear it without losing a heart, and clear it under the target time.
The five levels
- Pumpkin Patch: a little pyramid of 32 tiles
- Candy Lane: 48 tiles on two layers
- Owl Woods: 72 tiles: clear the tall stacks first
- Moon Hill: 108 tiles
- Star Castle: 126 tiles on four layers
Clear the Star Castle and the five levels loop again on the two biggest tables with a tighter clock. You have three hearts for the whole run, and the game is
the same for everyone each day, so you can compare scores. Press M to turn the sound off or on.
Tips
- Clear the tiles that block the most others first, usually on top of the tallest stacks.
- If three tiles of one picture are free, take the pair that opens up more tiles.
- Every picture has its own colour: spot the colour first, then check the shape.
- Match quickly for a combo, and watch Midnight cheer.
Questions
Is Halloween Mahjong free?
Yes. Halloween Mahjong is free online in your browser, with no download and no sign-up.
Can I play it on my phone?
Yes. Tap the tiles to pick them. On an upright phone the table sits at the top with Midnight underneath. It works on phones, tablets and computers.
Can every table be cleared?
Yes. Each deal is built backwards from free pairs, so a winning order always exists, and a shuffle after getting stuck keeps it that way.
Is it scary?
No. It is friendly Halloween fun: smiling pumpkins, waving bats, a sleepy moon and a black cat who cheers you on.
