Block Puzzle: how to play
Block Puzzle is a free block puzzle game you play online. Drag wooden pieces from a tray of three onto the board, fill a whole row or column to clear it, and keep room for the next pieces: nothing ever falls, so every move is yours to plan. Cubby, a cheerful wooden block, takes you through five sunny places, each with its own goal. If you like a calm wood block puzzle that still makes you think, this one is for you.
How to play
- Drag a piece from the tray onto the board and let go: this is a block puzzle online with no timer racing you down, just pieces to fit. On a phone the piece rides a little above your finger so you can see the squares under it. You can also tap a piece and then tap the board where it should go.
- With a keyboard, press 1, 2 or 3 (or Q and E) to pick a piece, the arrow keys (or WASD) to move it on the board, and Space or Enter to put it down. Esc puts it back.
- Fill every square of a row or a column and it clears. On the 9×9 boards a full 3×3 box clears too. Pieces never turn and nothing falls: a piece stays exactly where you put it.
- Place all three pieces and three new ones come. If none of the pieces left in the tray fits anywhere, you lose one of your three hearts and Cubby tidies the board for a fresh start (your goal progress is kept). Taking more than 30 seconds over one piece also costs a heart.
- Points: 5 for each square you place, 100 × lines² when you clear (one line 100, two at once 400, three 900), times your combo when pieces clear again within three goes (up to ×5), 50 for each apple or pebble and a level bonus of 200 times the level number. Three stars per level: clear the goal, keep all your hearts, and beat the target time.
The five levels
- Meadow Picnic: an 8×8 board and small pieces: clear 5 lines (the first gap is waiting for you)
- Orchard Lane: apples sit on the board: fill their row or column to pick all 5
- Treehouse Den: a bigger 9×9 board with bigger pieces, and a full 3×3 box clears too: clear 8 lines or boxes
- Lakeside Dock: pebbles fill some squares: clear their lines to wash all 7 away (zigzag pieces join in)
- Lighthouse Point: apples and pebbles together: score 2,400 points in the level, and clearing lots at once helps
Clear Lighthouse Point and the five places come round again with new pieces: lap 2 sets bigger goals (half as many lines and points again, more apples and pebbles), deals more big pieces and stops making sure every piece in the tray fits; lap 3 is bigger still. You have three hearts for the whole run, and the game is
the same for everyone each day, so you can compare scores. Press M to turn the sound off or on.
Tips
- Keep a big open space for the 3×3 square and the long five-piece: they are the hardest to fit.
- Look at all three pieces before you place the first one, and play the awkward one while there is room.
- Clearing two or three lines with one piece is worth far more than clearing them one by one.
- A piece that is greyed out in the tray doesn't fit anywhere right now: make room for it first.
