Geography Games: how to play
Geography is a free geography game you play online: a daily map quiz hosted by Globo, a well-travelled globe in reading glasses. Find countries on the world map, name the country that glows and match capital cities, travelling from Europe to a world tour, with new questions every day that are the same for everyone.
How to play
- Globo names a country and you tap it on the map: this geography game online works like a classic map quiz. Small countries count if you tap close to their border, so you don't need a perfect aim.
- From the Americas a country glows on the map and you pick its name from the answers under the map. From Africa capital cities join in: tap the country a capital belongs to. From Asia & Oceania you name the capital of the glowing country.
- With a keyboard, press 1 to 6 to pick an answer, move between countries with the arrow keys and press Enter or Space to tap the one that is outlined.
- Each question has a 30-second clock. A wrong tap, a wrong answer or the clock running out costs one of your three hearts, and Globo shows you where the country is.
- Points: 50 for each right answer plus 10 for every answer in your current streak (up to ten), 25 more for a capital question, and a level bonus of 100 times the level number. Three stars per level: clear it, keep all your hearts, and beat the target time shown under the map.
The five levels
- Europe: 6 right answers to find: tap the country Globo names (the bigger countries only)
- Americas: 8 right answers, and a country glows: pick its name
- Africa: 8 right answers, and capital cities join in: tap the country a capital belongs to
- Asia & Oceania: 8 right answers: name the capital of the glowing country, and the wrong names are its neighbours
- World Tour: the whole world map, 10 right answers and six choices
Clear World Tour and the five places come round again with new questions: every country can come up, there are six choices everywhere, two more right answers per level each lap (up to four more) and 15% less time per question each lap, never under 15 seconds. You have three hearts for the whole run, and the game is
the same for everyone each day, so you can compare scores. Press M to turn the sound off or on.
Tips
- Learn the big countries first: once you know where they are, the small ones around them are much easier to find.
- Near a small country? Aim for the middle of where it should be: a tap close to its border counts.
- Capital questions score 25 more. Every wrong answer shows you the right country, so you learn the map as you play.
- The questions stay the same all day, so a second go is a good way to practise the world map.
Questions
Is Geography free?
Yes. Geography is free to play online in your browser: no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy.
Can I play the map quiz on my phone?
Yes. Tap the map with your finger: taps near a small country's border count too. On an upright phone the map sits above Globo, with the answers underneath.
Is this world map game the same every day?
There are new questions every day, and everyone gets the same questions on the same day, so you can compare scores with friends.
Which countries can come up in the countries quiz?
Most of the world's countries. The map is made from Natural Earth's public-domain outlines, simplified so the game loads fast; very small island countries aren't on it, so they never come up.
